Summary of important changes
This release includes a number of new tasks and features and a larger
number of bug fixes and improvements, all of which are detailed below. The changes introduced in this release are the following:
- Production of a single time-stamped radiation monitor file: This is a convenience product, containing count rate and spectral data from the radiation monitor, which may be used by downstream SAS tasks.
- Flagging of the Jupiter Patch in OM data: An oval-shaped area of the OM detector has experienced a drop in sensitivity due to
exposure to Jupiter on 2017-07-17. This area has been flagged within
the OM\_BADPIX CCF (see XMM-CCF-REL-368), to distinguish them from bad pixels
in the quality map
extensions of some OM image products and downstream flag values of sources in OM
source lists. These changed values apply to both previously known low-sensitivity
pixels and to those in the sensitivity-degraded patch caused by the observation of
Jupiter in revolution 3224. Changes to the following SAS tasks facilitate use of the
new values in the CCF: {\bf omcosflag}, {\bf omqualitymap},
{\bf omdetect}, {\bf omsource}.
- time-dependent OM grism correction: The SAS task {\bf omgrism} has been modified to apply a time-dependent
sensitivity (TDS) correction to OM grism (fluxed) spectra and insert a keyword,
{\bf TDS\_CORR} into the primary header of the spectrum
FITS file to convey the value. The {\bf omgrismplot} task has also been modified
to output the value of the header information above the fluxed spectrum graphic.
The sensitivity correction has been introduced in the calibration file
OM\_GRISM\_0005.CCF file.
- treatment of very large OM mosaics: An artifical restriction of OM image size to 3000x3000 pixels has been removed in
the {\task omdetect} task.
- Treatment of non-standard spectra: To help normal users avoid producing spectra which can not be processed by later
software, a number of warning and error messages have been added to the SAS.
These cope with the cases where a spectrum has been created with a non-standard
pattern selection or a non-standard PI range and binning.
- emldetect: The extension likelihood, EXT_ML, is now set for all<\B>
sources. An estimate of the pile up level is made for each source and written
into a new column in the output source list.
- catcorr: The systematic error has been set to 1.29 arcseconds (from the
previous value of 1.5 arcseconds) for fields which have not been corrected
by adjusting to standard catalogues.
- handling of EPIC-pn offset maps: the correct EPIC-pn offset map should now
be used in the case when an observation contains multiple offset maps.
- extraction Regions in beta space: an error in the placement
of the RGS extraction region, when processing is performed in BETA space,
has been corrected
- xmmextractor: small errors in the production of the processed date of the
full XMM-Newton instrument data have been corrected

Binaries distributed
This version of SAS is released in two binary versions for Linux, RHEL 6.8 and Ubuntu 16.04, and one for Mac OS X (Sierra). These versions have been tested and found to run correctly on several other platforms including CentOs 7.3, High Sierra and Mojave.

Modifications of the output source list in preparation of 4XMM:
+ EXT_ML: The extent likelihood is now passed to the output source
lists for all detections, resolved as extended or not. All
conditionals in emldetect_mod.f90, emlfit.f90, and eml_io.f90 that
refer to a zero extent likelihood are changed to the extent
radius. Its value ("ext" / "sigma") is thus saved within
emlfit.f90/mulsou before each "return" (not only at the end of the
subroutine).
+ PILEUP: A pile-up level per instrument is newly included,
following the recipe provided in SSC-CEA-TN-1101. Like the
hardness ratios, the values are written (only) to the the summary
row per instrument, i.e. the summary over all energy bands, since
they are derived using the respective count numbers, and set to
null elsewhere. For the use with multiple observations, conversion
factors can be passed to edetect_stack via the "rawrows"
(multi-obs pileup-levels in the emldetect source lists are just
sums of the contributions). The pile-up thresholds of 1.3ct/frame
for MOS and 0.15ct/frame for pn are hardcoded so far and might be
transformed into task parameters in future versions.
