XMM-Newton AO-7

The XMM-Newton seventh Announcement of Opportunity (AO-7) closed on the 5th of October 2007.

In total, 586 valid proposals were submitted requesting, in total, 113810 ks of science time. The sixth Announcement of Opportunity covers a period of one year with 14500 ks of observing time available for distribution. The over-subscription factor is 7.8.

In total 54 proposals for "Large Programs" were submitted. Triggered/TOO observations are requested in 44 proposals. For the joint XMM-Newton Chandra program the SOC received 8 proposals and for the joint XMM-Newton ESO (VLT and VLTI) program 11 proposals are competing.

SOC received proposals from 424 different principal investigators from 23 countries, mostly ESA member states, the United States and Japan. The number of countries involved increases to 33 if co- investigators are taken into account as well. Considering principal investigators and co-investigators, about 1560 individual scientists were involved in the response to the seventh Announcement of Opportunity.

Newton Image Gallery visible in Google Earth

The XMM-Newton Gallery, a collection of astronomical images and spectra taken with the XMM-Newton X-ray and optical instruments, (see http://xmm.esac.esa.int/external/xmm_science/gallery/public/) can be displayed, since the 24th of August, in association with the corresponding celestial target objects in the latest version of Google Earth:

You will have to download the Google Earth file format (KML) file xmm_gallery.kmz, available at:
   http://xmm.esac.esa.int/external/xmm_science/gallery/images/xmm_gallery.kmz
and load it into Google Earth.

'Switch to Sky' from the Google Earth 'View' menu and enjoy the XMM-Newton Gallery projected onto the sky.

Users' Guide to the XMM-Newton Science Analysis System: update

XMM-Newton SOC has updated the Users' Guide to the XMM-Newton Science Analysis System for SAS version 7.1.0. The guide is available again in different formats (postscript, pdf and html) from the XMM-Newton Proposer's Info and Manuals Web page (Section: Data Analysis) at:
