The European Space Astronomy Centre (ESAC) of the European Space Agency (ESA) is organising the XMM-Newton Science workshop

The Extremes of Black Hole Accretion

8 - 10 June 2015

European Space Astronomy Centre (ESAC), Madrid, Spain

Aims and Scope of the Meeting

Some of the most energetic processes seen in the Universe arise close to a super-massive black hole such as relativistic jets and winds. These are now known to play a key role in determining the growth of galaxies across cosmic time, but the mechanisms by which they are launched remain unclear. Recent progress on probing the properties of the accretion flow at the smallest radii include new spectral-timing techniques to identify the reverberation signal from the disc, as well as spectral studies of the ultrafast outflows, the broad iron line and soft X-ray excess. The stellar mass black holes provide a natural comparison sample, and again new data and new techniques are allowing us to focus in on the regions closest to the event horizon. The time is ripe for a conference to similarly focus on these extreme regions, to determine the structure of the accretion flow on the smallest scales and its relation to relativistic outflows and jets.

Registration and abstract submission is planned to open on 12th February 2015, with deadline for abstract submission 23rd March 2015.

Decisions about accepted presentations (talks and posters) will be communicated before the registration deadline.

Conference proceedings will be published as a regular issue of the refereed journal Astronomical Notes.

Venue and accommodation

The workshop will be held at the European Space Astronomy Centre (ESAC), near Madrid, Spain.

A block hotel booking has been made. Details are given in the Workshop web page.

A shuttle bus service between the hotel and ESAC will be provided.

Social Events

The workshop dinner is planned to take place Tuesday, 9th June 2015 in Madrid and will cost around 50 €, payable in cash upon arrival. The dinner and meal preferences can be booked during on-line registration. More details will be published in due time.

We plan to organise during lunch breaks guided tours through the operations rooms of XMM-Newton and other ESA missions operated from ESAC. Sign-up and more details will be announced during the meeting.
