Full release note for ppsprod-21.80 ====================================== Pipeline Version: 21.80_20260604_1143 Pipeline name: ppsprod Release Date: 2026-06-04 SAS build identifier: xmmsas_22.1.0-5ba234281-20250924 SAS branch-commit: pps-sas21.0.0-5ba234281 Summary ======= This pipeline is based in SAS21 where some extra corrections in the effective areas of EPIC and RGS instruments are now applied by default. The correction for the time degradation of the OM sensitivity has also changed with special treatment of sources near the boresight. A major change in the source detection algortithm for EPIC cameras has been implemented to improve the significance of the detections specially the weaker ones. A brief description of the most relevant changes is provided below. For more detailed description reader is referred to the release notes of SAS21 and relevant CCFs and the Pipeline Products Description document available in XMM-Newton SOC web pages (https://www.cosmos.esa.int/web/xmm-newton) -) The new source detection method assumes a constant flux across different EPIC exposures for each candidate source in each energy band. It also assumes the spectra of all sources can be described by a powerlaw with the same spectral index and absorbing HI column density for all EPIC exposures and energy bands though different from source to source. Then, the free parameters of the fitting process for each source are the location of the source, the model parameters that best represent the relative rates in the five energy bands in all EPIC cameras and the flux of the source during the obervation. As the new approach reduces noticeably the number of free parameters the significance of the detections increases, specially for weak sources. Once the positions are determined for the final source list, the rate in each band and exposure is computed in a second step as PSF photometry. -) Although the flux of the source during the observation is one of the fitted parameters by the detection algortihm, the conversion from rates to fluxes in the different bands and cameras is still based on a model with spectral index 1.7 and absorbing HI column density 3E20cm-2. The Energy Conversion Factors are computed with the extra corrections mentioned above below, including the time dependency of the contamination in the MOS cameras. -) MOS effective areas incude a correction for flux agreement with EPIC-pn -) pn effective areas include a correction for spectral agreement with NuSTAR -) RGS effective areas include rectification factors for flux agreement with EPIC-pn -) OM mosaic images are now created per filter and observation, merging all exposures from the same filter independently of the mode. Source detection on mosaiced images are performed only if more than one exposure contributes to the mosaic. Further, sources detected in mosaiced images are discarded if they are located in a pixel where only one exposure contributes. -) A new method to correct for the OM sensitivity degration with time has been implemented, with a spectial treatment of sources near the boresight. The version of SAS being used is a pipeline-specific branch pps-sas21.0.0 at commit level 5ba234281. This is based on the public SAS release 21.0.0, described at http://www.cosmos.esa.int/web/xmm-newton/sas-release-notes-2100 Documentation ============= Documentation for this pipeline can be found at: http://www.cosmos.esa.int/web/xmm-newton/pipeline and links therein. products generated by the Archival Catalogue and Database Subsystem (ACDS) at the Observatoire Astronomique de Strasbourg (OAS) - they are the result of cross-correlations of XMM sources with archival catalogues by the ACDS. They have been made previously but are outlined here for the first time. Those files with xxxxa tags are generated for each external catalogue that the XMM sources are correlated with. ii. SAS Tasks ============= The current pipeline uses a pipeline-specific SAS branch pps-sas21.0.0 at commit level 5ba234281. This branch is built upon the version 21.0.0 release of the SAS (manifest xmmsas_20230412_1735 - see http://www.cosmos.esa.int/web/xmm-newton/sas-release-notes-2100. for details of the SAS task versions and changes relative to the previous SAS releases) but includes a number of specific task patches. SAS tasks used in the current pipeline are shown in the table below, along with their respective versions in SAS 21.0.0. The second column indicates whether the task has a newer (>) or the same (=) version number in the pipeline version. |================|===|=================|============| | TASK | | SAS 21.0.0 | 21.51 | |================|===|=================|============| |addattribute | = | 2.3 | 2.3 | |arfgen | > | 1.104 | 1.105 | |attbin | = | 1.5.1 | 1.5.1 | |attcalc | = | 4.39 | 4.39 | |attfilter | = | 4.39 | 4.39 | |atthkgen | = | 1.22.1 | 1.22.1 | |attmove | = | 1.6 | 1.6 | |backscale | = | 1.6 | 1.6 | |badpix | = | 2.33 | 2.33 | |badpixfind | = | 1.41 | 1.41 | |bkgoptrate | = | 1.8.2 | 1.8.2 | |catcorr | > | 0.11.2 | 0.12 | |catprep | = | 0.5.7 | 0.5.7 | |cifbuild | = | 4.10.1 | 4.10.1 | |dpssflag | = | 11.6 | 11.6 | |dpsssrc | = | 1.2.1 | 1.2.1 | |dscopyblock | = | 1.11.1 | 1.11.1 | |dscp | = | 1.11.1 | 1.11.1 | |dsrm | = | 1.11.1 | 1.11.1 | |ebkgreg | = | 0.8.1 | 0.8.1 | |eboxdetect | > | 4.29 | 4.30.1 | |echeckregion | > | 1.54 | 1.57 | |ecoordconv | > | 1.54 | 1.57 | |eexpmap | = | 4.12.1 | 4.12.1 | |efftplot | > | 2.21 | 2.22.1 | |ekstest | = | 2.8.1 | 2.8.1 | |elcplot | = | 2.6 | 2.6 | |emask | = | 2.16 | 2.16 | |embadpixfind | = | 2.6.1 | 2.6.1 | |emenergy | = | 8.9 | 8.9 | |emevents | = | 8.8 | 8.8 | |emeventsproj | = | 1.6 | 1.6 | |emframes | = | 5.11 | 5.11 | |emldetect | = | 7.8 | 7.8 | |emldetect_esc | > | - | 0.6.1 | |emosaic | = | 1.19.1 | 1.19.1 | |emtaglenoise | = | 1.3 | 1.3 | |eootepileupmask | = | 2.10.2 | 2.10.2 | |epatplot | > | 1.22 | 1.25 | |epevents | = | 6.55 | 6.55 | |epexposure | = | 0.16 | 0.16 | |epfast | = | 0.7 | 0.7 | |epframes | = | 8.116 | 8.116 | |epiclccorr | = | 1.23.1 | 1.23.1 | |epnoise | = | 0.9 | 0.9 | |eposcorr | = | 3.13 | 3.13 | |epproc | = | 2.25.3 | 2.25.3 | |epreject | = | 5.18.1 | 5.18.1 | |esensmap | = | 4.0 | 4.0 | |eslewchain | = | 1.20.1 | 1.20.1 | |eslewsearch | = | 1.20.1 | 1.20.1 | |esources | = | 1.5.1 | 1.5.1 | |especget | > | 1.54 | 1.57 | |esplinemap | = | 5.4.1 | 5.4.1 | |etimeget | > | 1.54 | 1.57 | |etruecolor | = | 1.30.1 | 1.30.1 | |evalcorr | = | 0.8 | 0.8 | |evlistcomb | = | 4.20 | 4.20 | |evqpb | = | 0.11 | 0.11 | |evselect | = | 3.71.2 | 3.71.2 | |gtialign | = | 2.11 | 2.11 | |gtimerge | = | 1.8 | 1.8 | |hkgtigen | = | 1.15 | 1.15 | |implot | = | 2.20.1 | 2.20.1 | |implotregions | = | 1.1.1 | 1.1.1 | |implotrgb | = | 2.20.1 | 2.20.1 | |imweightadd | = | 1.68.1 | 1.68.1 | |lccorr_pcms | = | 1.7.1 | 1.7.1 | |lcplot | > | 1.22.1 | 1.23 | |merge | = | 0.15 | 0.15 | |odfingest | = | 3.33.1 | 3.33.1 | |om2pha | = | 0.4 | 0.4 | |omatt | = | 2.58 | 2.58 | |omcomb | = | 2.5 | 2.5 | |omcosflag | = | 1.35 | 1.35 | |omdetect | = | 5.41 | 5.41 | |omdrifthist | = | 1.44 | 1.44 | |omfastflat | = | 1.22 | 1.22 | |omfastshift | = | 1.26 | 1.26 | |omflatfield | = | 2.7 | 2.7 | |omflatgen | = | 1.13 | 1.13 | |omgprep | = | 1.11.1 | 1.11.1 | |omgrism | = | 1.30 | 1.30 | |omgrismplot | = | 1.8.6 | 1.8.6 | |omlcbuild | = | 1.41 | 1.41 | |ommag | > | 3.12 | 3.13 | |ommergelists | > | 1.2 | 1.3 | |ommodmap | = | 2.26 | 2.26 | |ommosaic | > | 2.11 | 2.15 | |omprep | = | 2.48 | 2.48 | |omqualitymap | > | 1.5 | 1.6 | |omregion | = | 2.15 | 2.15 | |omsrclistcomb | > | 2.24 | 2.25 | |omthconv | = | 1.35 | 1.35 | |orbit | = | 3.2.1 | 3.2.1 | |ppsslewsumm | = | 1.3.1 | 1.3.1 | |ppssumm | = | 3.7.1 | 3.7.1 | |preqgti | = | 0.10.1 | 0.10.1 | |radmonfix | = | 0.5.4 | 0.5.4 | |region | = | 7.15.3 | 7.15.3 | |regionmask | = | 1.68.1 | 1.68.1 | |rgsangles | = | 4.9.2 | 4.9.2 | |rgsbadpix | = | 2.20 | 2.20 | |rgsbkgmodel | > | 1.5.1 | 1.6 | |rgsbkgmodelTest | > | 1.5.1 | 1.6 | |rgsenergy | = | 2.2 | 2.2 | |rgsevents | = | 3.13 | 3.13 | |rgsfilter | = | 1.19 | 1.19 | |rgsfluxer | = | 1.10 | 1.10 | |rgsframes | = | 3.19 | 3.19 | |rgsimplot | = | 1.23 | 1.23 | |rgslccorr | = | 0.57.2 | 0.57.2 | |rgsoffsetcalc | = | 1.19 | 1.19 | |rgsregions | = | 1.23 | 1.23 | |rgsrmfgen | > | 1.17 | 1.18 | |rgssources | > | 6.3.3 | 6.4 | |rgsspecplot | = | 2.26 | 2.26 | |rgsspectrum | = | 2.9 | 2.9 | |rmfgen | = | 2.8.7 | 2.8.7 | |slconv | = | 2.6.2 | 2.6.2 | |specgroup | = | 1.7.1 | 1.7.1 | |srcmatch | > | 3.23 | 3.26 | |tabcalc | = | 2.9 | 2.9 | |tabgtigen | = | 2.13 | 2.13 | |================|===|=================|============| iii. Calibration Files ====================== Pipeline processing generally accesses an evolving set of CCFs (current calibration files). For each observation, a subset of the full set of CCFs is used in processing that pertains to the epoch of the observation; the CCF components/versions used are identified in the calibration index file (PooooooooooOBX000CALIND0000.FIT) that is included in the delivered observation data product set. The complete list of CCFs used in the processing is given here: Table of CCFs used for Pipeline version: 21.80 |================================|=============|=======| | Calibration File | Issue range | Count | |================================|=============|=======| | EMOS1_ADUCONV | 0087-0111 | 25| | EMOS1_BACKGROUND | 0001 | 1| | EMOS1_BADPIX | 0025-0039(*)| 13| | EMOS1_CALSOURCEDATA | 0001 | 1| | EMOS1_CONTAMINATION | 0002 | 1| | EMOS1_CTI | 0075-0101(*)| 26| | EMOS1_DARKFRAME | 0011-0038 | 28| | EMOS1_EFFICIENCY | 0001 | 1| | EMOS1_FILTERTRANSX | 0015 | 1| | EMOS1_FWC | 0005 | 1| | EMOS1_HKPARMINT | 0008-0011 | 4| | EMOS1_LINCOORD | 0019 | 1| | EMOS1_MODEPARAM | 0006 | 1| | EMOS1_PATTERNLIB | 0005 | 1| | EMOS1_QUANTUMEF | 0020-0021 | 2| | EMOS1_REDIST | 0106-0125(*)| 19| | EMOS1_SCREENTHRESH | 0001 | 1| | EMOS1_TIMECORR | 0003 | 1| | EMOS2_ADUCONV | 0088-0116 | 29| | EMOS2_BACKGROUND | 0001 | 1| | EMOS2_BADPIX | 0017-0026(*)| 9| | EMOS2_CALSOURCEDATA | 0001 | 1| | EMOS2_CONTAMINATION | 0002 | 1| | EMOS2_CTI | 0076-0105(*)| 29| | EMOS2_DARKFRAME | 0011-0034 | 24| | EMOS2_EFFICIENCY | 0001 | 1| | EMOS2_FILTERTRANSX | 0015 | 1| | EMOS2_FWC | 0005 | 1| | EMOS2_HKPARMINT | 0008-0010 | 3| | EMOS2_LINCOORD | 0019 | 1| | EMOS2_MODEPARAM | 0006 | 1| | EMOS2_PATTERNLIB | 0005 | 1| | EMOS2_QUANTUMEF | 0020-0021 | 2| | EMOS2_REDIST | 0106-0125(*)| 19| | EMOS2_SCREENTHRESH | 0001 | 1| | EMOS2_TIMECORR | 0003 | 1| | EPN_ADUCONV | 0077-0142(*)| 36| | EPN_BACKGROUND | 0001 | 1| | EPN_BADPIX | 0093-0147 | 55| | EPN_BUCLOSEDODI | 0001-0005 | 5| | EPN_CALSOURCEDATA | 0001 | 1| | EPN_CTI | 0055-0058(*)| 2| | EPN_DARKFRAME | 0001 | 1| | EPN_EFFICIENCY | 0001 | 1| | EPN_FILTERTRANSX | 0019 | 1| | EPN_FWC | 0005 | 1| | EPN_FWC_EFF | 0001 | 1| | EPN_HKPARMINT | 0005 | 1| | EPN_LINCOORD | 0009 | 1| | EPN_MODEPARAM | 0003 | 1| | EPN_PATTERNLIB | 0001 | 1| | EPN_QUANTUMEF | 0018 | 1| | EPN_REDIST | 0013 | 1| | EPN_REJECT | 0006-0008(*)| 2| | EPN_SPATIALCTI | 0001 | 1| | EPN_TICLOSEDODI | 0001-0013 | 13| | EPN_TIMECORR | 0011-0015(*)| 4| | EPN_TIMEJUMPTOL | 0001 | 1| | OM_ASTROMET | 0012 | 1| | OM_BADPIX | 0007-0008 | 2| | OM_COLORTRANS | 0010 | 1| | OM_DARKFRAME | 0003 | 1| | OM_DIFFUSEGALA | 0001 | 1| | OM_GRISMCAL | 0008 | 1| | OM_HKPARMINT | 0004 | 1| | OM_LARGESCALESENS | 0002 | 1| | OM_LINCOORD | 0001 | 1| | OM_PHOTTONAT | 0009 | 1| | OM_PIXTOPIXSENS | 0003 | 1| | OM_PSF1DRB | 0010 | 1| | OM_QUICKMAG | 0002 | 1| | OM_ZODIACAL | 0001 | 1| | RGS1_ADUCONV | 0006-0030(*)| 18| | RGS1_BACKGROUND | 0001 | 1| | RGS1_BADPIX | 0012-0040(*)| 12| | RGS1_CALSOURCEDATA | 0001 | 1| | RGS1_CLOCKPATTERNS | 0001 | 1| | RGS1_COOLPIX | 0001 | 1| | RGS1_CROSSPSF | 0004 | 1| | RGS1_CTI | 0001-0020(*)| 14| | RGS1_DARKFRAME | 0005 | 1| | RGS1_EFFAREACORR | 0017 | 1| | RGS1_EXAFS | 0005 | 1| | RGS1_HKPARMINT | 0009-0016(*)| 6| | RGS1_LINCOORD | 0008 | 1| | RGS1_LINESPREADFUNC | 0005 | 1| | RGS1_MODEPARAM | 0004-0005 | 2| | RGS1_QUANTUMEF | 0015 | 1| | RGS1_REDIST | 0004 | 1| | RGS1_SAACORR | 0001 | 1| | RGS1_TEMPLATEBCKGND | 0006 | 1| | RGS2_ADUCONV | 0006-0035(*)| 19| | RGS2_BACKGROUND | 0001 | 1| | RGS2_BADPIX | 0012-0033(*)| 8| | RGS2_CALSOURCEDATA | 0001 | 1| | RGS2_CLOCKPATTERNS | 0001 | 1| | RGS2_COOLPIX | 0001 | 1| | RGS2_CROSSPSF | 0004 | 1| | RGS2_CTI | 0001-0021(*)| 15| | RGS2_DARKFRAME | 0006 | 1| | RGS2_EFFAREACORR | 0017 | 1| | RGS2_EXAFS | 0005 | 1| | RGS2_HKPARMINT | 0008-0015(*)| 6| | RGS2_LINCOORD | 0008 | 1| | RGS2_LINESPREADFUNC | 0005 | 1| | RGS2_MODEPARAM | 0004-0005 | 2| | RGS2_QUANTUMEF | 0016 | 1| | RGS2_REDIST | 0004 | 1| | RGS2_SAACORR | 0001 | 1| | RGS2_TEMPLATEBCKGND | 0007-0008 | 2| | XMM_ABSCOEFS | 0006 | 1| | XMM_BORESIGHT | 0036 | 1| | XMM_FLARE | 0001 | 1| | XMM_MISCDATA | 0022 | 1| | XMM_RMFEPOCH | 0001 | 1| | XMM_SCALEFACTORS | 0001 | 1| | XMM_SPDETMAP | 0001 | 1| | XMM_SPECQUAL | 0002 | 1| | XMM_SWCX | 0001 | 1| | XRT1_XAREAEF | 0011 | 1| | XRT1_XENCIREN | 0003 | 1| | XRT1_XPSF | 0016 | 1| | XRT2_XAREAEF | 0012 | 1| | XRT2_XENCIREN | 0003 | 1| | XRT2_XPSF | 0016 | 1| | XRT3_XAREAEF | 0014 | 1| | XRT3_XENCIREN | 0003 | 1| | XRT3_XPSF | 0018 | 1| |================================|=============|=======| (*): Incomplete range. Response Matrices ===================== The pipeline accesses a set of canned response matrices (RMFs) which correspond to those issued with the SAS public release used as base for it, here 21.0.0. RMFs used in this pipeline were released April 29th, 2024. EPIC MOS RMFs are defined via a set of epoch-dependent files (19 epochs to date). They are further divided by instrument mode and by detector position - in particular, MOS RMFs are available to reflect the impacts of changes occurring in the core (c) and wings (w) of a small patch known to have suffered degradation, as well as off-patch (o) locations (i.e. everywhere else on the detector). PN RMFs are divided by instrument mode and position along the Y-direction of the CCDs. The canned EPIC response matrices used in the bulk reprocessing are shown below. |====================================| | Canned RMFs | |====================================| | m_e_im_p0_c.rmf | | m_e_im_p0_w.rmf | | m_e_im_p0_o.rmf | | m_e_im_pall_o.rmf | | m_e_im_pall_c.rmf | | m_e_im_pall_w.rmf | | m_e_tu_p0_c.rmf | | m_e_tu_p0_w.rmf | | m_e_tu_p0_o.rmf | | m_e_tu_pall_o.rmf | | m_e_tu_pall_c.rmf | | m_e_tu_pall_w.rmf | | | | epn_e_bu23_dY9_v18.0.rmf | | epn_e_bu23_sdY9_v18.0.rmf | | epn_e_bu23_sY9_v18.0.rmf | | epn_e_ef20_dY_v18.0.rmf | | epn_e_ef20_sdY_v18.0.rmf | | epn_e_ef20_sY_v18.0.rmf | | epn_e_ff20_dY_v18.0.rmf | | epn_e_ff20_sdY_v18.0.rmf | | epn_e_ff20_sY_v18.0.rmf | | epn_e_lw20_dY_v18.0.rmf | | epn_e_lw20_sdY_v18.0.rmf | | epn_e_lw20_sY_v18.0.rmf | | epn_e_sw20_dY_v18.0.rmf | | epn_e_sw20_sdY_v18.0.rmf | | epn_e_sw20_sY_v18.0.rmf | | epn_e_sw20_sdY6_v18.0.rmf | | epn_e_sw20_sY6_v18.0.rmf | | epn_e_ti40_sdY9_v18.0.rmf | |====================================| where = 1 (MOS1) or 2 (MOS2), , i=1-19 (MOS epochs), i=1-4 (PN epochs) and , j=0-9 (Y-positions); , m=5-9 (Y-positions); , n=7-9 (Y-positions); The latest available canned response files are described at, and available from, http://www.cosmos.esa.int/web/xmm-newton/epic-response-files. Energy Conversion Factors ============================= EPIC energy conversion factors (ECFs) are used to derive simple flux estimates from measured count rates. The ECFs are computed using the instrument response files for an assumed absorbed power law model with Gamma=1.7 and an absorbing column density of 3x10^20/cm2. ECFs used in pipeline processing are computed for each EPIC instrument and filter, for each energy band and RMF epoch described above. For PN they are based on the full-frame mode, on-axis position. For MOS they are based on the full-frame mode, off-patch. This off-patch position was chosen to reflect the majority of sources - RMFs for the core and wings of the MOS 'patch' are only relevant to a very small number of objects in the field. The largest epoch-dependence is found in MOS cameras in band 1 and amounts to a range of about 15%. The ECFs for the latest epoch in each camera, filter and band are presented in the table below. |============|========|============================================================================| | Instrument | Filter | Band | | | | 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 8 | 9 | |============|========|============================================================================| | epn | open | 16.9781 | 10.0692 | 6.1545 | 1.9869 | 0.6002 | 4.1332 | 5.0990 | | epn | thin | 9.5251 | 8.1206 | 5.8668 | 1.9557 | 0.5993 | 3.3339 | 4.5598 | | epn | medium | 8.3702 | 7.8677 | 5.7674 | 1.9318 | 0.5993 | 3.2022 | 4.4614 | | epn | thick | 5.1063 | 6.0481 | 4.9894 | 1.8312 | 0.5917 | 2.6024 | 3.7650 | | emos1 | open | 2.9897 | 2.2303 | 2.2205 | 0.7977 | 0.1696 | 1.1101 | 1.5646 | | emos1 | thin | 1.7218 | 1.8449 | 2.1183 | 0.7856 | 0.1690 | 0.9567 | 1.4407 | | emos1 | medium | 1.5253 | 1.7937 | 2.0825 | 0.7767 | 0.1683 | 0.9287 | 1.4143 | | emos1 | thick | 1.0143 | 1.4591 | 1.8547 | 0.7449 | 0.1669 | 0.8069 | 1.2534 | | emos2 | open | 2.5568 | 2.1770 | 2.2414 | 0.8071 | 0.1770 | 1.0830 | 1.5632 | | emos2 | thin | 1.4708 | 1.7955 | 2.1385 | 0.7952 | 0.1763 | 0.9423 | 1.4402 | | emos2 | medium | 1.2935 | 1.7447 | 2.1022 | 0.7860 | 0.1760 | 0.9157 | 1.4134 | | emos2 | thick | 0.8534 | 1.4163 | 1.8719 | 0.7535 | 0.1737 | 0.7986 | 1.2530 | |============|========|============================================================================| vii. Source Position Rectification ================================== In the bulk reprocessing, astrometric field rectification (where possible) is performed against extracts from the USNO-B1.0, SDSS-DR9 or 2MASS catalogues as the astrometric reference frame.
