ABSTRACT
We propose an XMM-Newton survey overlapping 20 deg^2 in legacy field SDSS Stripe 82, the location of an unsurpassed collection of publicly available deep multi-wavelength data, including >800 optical spectra per deg^2. The addition of wide-field hard X-ray coverage addresses our key science goal to determine supermassive black hole growth in quasars, which likely dominate the total black hole mass accreted over cosmic time. The survey area and depth are designed to probe luminosities and redshifts that have been poorly explored in hard X-rays, capitalizing on XMM-Newton's hard X-ray response, large effective area and field of view. "Stripe 82X'' requires 185 overlapping 4.5-ks pointings in mosaic mode, with limiting flux F_(0.5-2keV) ~ 5e-15 erg/s/cm^2 over most of the field.
