ABSTRACT
We propose a 1.6 Ms XMM-Newton ``Very Large Program'' to settle unambiguously one of the most controversial and open problems of modern astrophysics: the existence of the "missing baryons" in a WHIM. We will do so by complementing the first successful exploratory LETG observation of the z>0.4 blazar 1ES~1553+113, with additional 1.6 Ms of XMM-Newton RGS time, so more than doubling the S/N and thus the absorption line equivalent width sensitivity of the currently available LETG spectrum in the fundamental spectral region of the intervening oxygen. The proposed observation will enable:(1) the solution to the missing-baryon problem; (2) a robust estimate of the WHIM metallicity; (3) pioneering studiesof thermo- and chemo-dynamics of the IGM with cosmic time and so of the diffuse-gas/galaxies interplay.

PAPERS
Authors marked in red are (co-)investigators in the proposal

Classification of papers are:
- CLASS 1:   papers that present specific XMM-Newton observations
- CLASS 2: papers that refer to published XMM-Newton results with complementary observations, follow-up analysis, or theoretical analysis
- CLASS 3: further deliveries which resulted from the program and which are made available to the community (e.g. source catalogues, processed images or spectra in public data base)
- CLASS 4: comments and suggestions from PI
