ABSTRACT
The XMM-Newton survey of M31 has revealed extended diffuse emission, in particular on the northern side, which is well correlated with the northern star-forming ring of the galaxy. We propose two deep pointings with 200 ks exposure each to cover the star-forming disc and to perform a detailed study of the diffuse emission. We will thus map the X-ray emission of the hot interstellar medium (ISM) in a spiral galaxy like our own on arcmin scales and measure the temperature, density, and filling factor of brighter ISM structures. In addition, we will obtain a complete list of X-ray sources in the northern disc of M31 down to the confusion limit of a few 10^34 erg s^-1, with improved variability and spectral information for all sources.

PAPERS
Authors marked in red are (co-)investigators in the proposal

Classification of papers are:
- CLASS 1:   papers that present specific XMM-Newton observations
- CLASS 2: papers that refer to published XMM-Newton results with complementary observations, follow-up analysis, or theoretical analysis
- CLASS 3: further deliveries which resulted from the program and which are made available to the community (e.g. source catalogues, processed images or spectra in public data base)
- CLASS 4: comments and suggestions from PI
