ABSTRACT | |
This is a Heritage program to study the ultimate products of structure formation in mass and time: a large, unbiased, signal-to-noise limited sample of galaxy clusters detected by Planck via their Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect. Completing the high-fidelity XMM coverage of this sample has extraordinary legacy value. We will (i) obtain an unbiased vision of the statistical properties of the cluster population; (ii) uncover the provenance of non-gravitational heating; (iii) measure how their gas is shaped by the collapse into dark matter haloes and the mergers that built today's clusters; (iv) resolve the major uncertainties in mass determinations that limit cosmological inferences; (v) build the foundation for cluster science with next-generation surveys. |
PAPERS |
- CLASS 1: | papers that present specific XMM-Newton observations |
- CLASS 2: | papers that refer to published XMM-Newton results with complementary observations, follow-up analysis, or theoretical analysis |
- CLASS 3: | further deliveries which resulted from the program and which are made available to the community (e.g. source catalogues, processed images or spectra in public data base) |
- CLASS 4: | comments and suggestions from PI |
