Abstract for Proposal 092090
Multi-wavelength XMM-Newton observations of blazars to be observed with IXPE
IXPE has opened a new window to the Universe by measuring X-ray
polarization, already leading to significant progress in our
understanding of particle acceleration in blazars. We propose to
expand on this success with simultaneous OM/Epic observations of
IXPE blazar targets. The proposed XMM-Newton exposures are needed to
determine the spectral shape of the targets, thus to obtain robust
spectro-polarimetric measurements. The requested data will be part of
planned multiwavelength campaigns in radio, optical, and gamma-rays,
enabling us to build simultaneous broaband datasets. Measurement of the
mm-to-X-ray continuum spectra of blazars, coupled with X-ray polarization,
will enable us to determine the mechanism and location of the X-rays,
as well as test particle acceleration models in blazars.
