Solar SystemsThe Sun's hot outer atmosphere (the "corona") produces X-rays but it is too nearby and bright for XMM-Newton's extremely sensitive detectors. Besides the Sun, other known X-ray sources in our solar system include the Earth, the Moon, Venus, Jupiter, Mars and comets. Although these X-ray sources are very weak compared to the other sources XMM-Newton studies, they are valuable as probes of planets, comets, and solar activity. [Ref 1] |
