Interaction of Galaxies

Gravitational interactions between galaxies are far more common than one might think assuming that the space density of galaxies is uniform. The galaxies are grouped into clusters, small groups, or pairs: far from being isolated systems they are formed and evolve in interaction with their environment and in particular with neighbouring galaxies. The gravitational interactions produce giant tidal waves in the discs of the galaxies, giving rise to spiral arms and provoking outbursts of star formation. Collisions between galaxies could contribute to the activity at the nuclei of radio galaxies and quasars.    [Ref  6]
