XMM-NewtonXMM-Newton is an X-ray observatory launched and operated by the European Space Agency (ESA), with instruments contributed and funded by ESA member states and NASA (USA). XMM-Newton was successfully launched by an Ariane 5 on the 10th of December of 1999. Its orbit is highly eccentric with a period of ~2 days. Although the original XMM-Newton project was approved for 2 years of scientific operations, all systems and payloads are designed to last for at least 10 years. The XMM-Newton spacecraft is operated by ESOC at Darmstadt (Germany), but the instruments and science operations in general are managed from ESAC at Madrid (Spain). |
