About this Image

The composite image combines an optical plus an X-ray EPIC view of NGC 1808, a barred spiral Seyfert 2 galaxy. The optical image was chosen to show the complex and extended spiral structure of the galaxy, while the X-ray emission reveals NGC 1808 as a starburst galaxy with intense star formation activity in the central region, as clearly seen in the lower left inset showing the X-ray emission only which is due to the presence of intense star formation activity and a hard unresolved source within the inner region.
In the field around this starburst galaxy, different spectral type point-like sources are visible as well. The X-ray data is colour coded as: red=0.3-1 keV, green=1-2 keV, blue=2-8 keV.

Detailed Caption The data were taken on April 6th, 2002. The single band images were first created using the "images" script, then processed by the ESA/ESO/NASA Photoshop FITS Liberator image processing software and afterwards mosaiced using the "emosaic" SAS task. Each layer was adaptively smoothed by the "asmooth" SAS task before combining the layers in the final RGB image.
