The irregular galactic supernova remnant 3C391 (also known as G31.9+0.0) is depicted in this XMM-Newton X-ray false colour image. The south east-north west elongated morphology of this SNR could be due to its interaction with surrounding molecular clouds. Its clumpy structure is due to the spatial distribution of the X-ray thermal emission: hotter and brighter through the interior (where several knots are seen), but colder and fainter towards the edges with a smoother faint medium (green) X-ray emission of the gas in the south west direction. Several point-like soft X-ray emitting sources are detected in the surroundings. The RGB image is colour coded as: red=0.3-1 keV, green=1-2 keV, blue=2-10.0keV.
