About this Image

The image shows the NGC 5044 galaxy group --- the X-ray brightest group in the sky --- viewed in a variety of wavebands from low-frequency radio to X-ray. The galaxies are shown using a combination of WISE infrared, Digitized Sky Survey optical, and Galex near-ultraviolet images. An XMM-Newton EPIC X-ray image (blue) shows the diffuse hot gas halo of the group, in which the galaxies are embedded. The abundance of heavy elements (primarily Iron) in this gas, derived from spectral mapping of the XMM data, is shown in purple. A past tidal interaction with an infalling galaxy has set the group core in motion, "sloshing" along a southeast-northwest (lower left - upper right) axis. The asymmetric abundance distribution is produced by the sloshing; the most Iron-rich gas, which would normally be evenly distributed around the dominant elliptical in the centre of the image, is offset to the northwest (upper right), while an arm of this material extends out along the line of sight, curving round to the southeast to produce the blob of high abundances on the lower left. An old radio jet and lobe, remnants of previous AGN outbursts, are revealed by GMRT radio data, shown in green. These have probably been caught up in the sloshing motion of the hot gas, distorting their shape and perhaps compression and brightening the lobe.
