R Aquarii is a symbiotic system where a white dwarf (WD) is accreting material from a less evolved and cool companion. As a result of the mass transfer, bipolar ejections are produced creating the extraordinary nebula. Astronomers used the EPIC cameras on board the XMM-Newton telescope to map for the first time, the extended emission produced by shocked gas surrounding this system. This image shows in purple gas with temperatures of millions degrees. Other colours represent the emission detected in optical by the Very Large Telescope. Investigator(s): J.A. Toala, L. Sabin, M.A. Guerrero, G. Ramos-Larios, Y.-H. Chu
