About this Image

Color composite of XMM-Newton and Hubble Space Telescope images of NGC 7009, the Saturn Nebula made by M. A. Guerrero. This image offers the opportunity to locate the hot, X-ray-emitting gas (blue in this image) relative to the cool, ionized nebular shell seen in optical wavelengths (Hα in red and [N II] in green). The XMM-Newton image was obtained by a team led by Y.-H. Chu (University of Illinois) and the Hubble Space Telescope images were taken by a team led by B. Balick (University of Washington).

Investigator(s):  M.A. Guerrero, R. Gruendl and Y.-H. Chu

Detailed Caption The planetary nebula NGC 7009, the Saturn Nebula, was observed by XMM-Newton on April 30, 2001 for a total exposure time of 31,600 seconds. The unique sensitivity of XMM-Newton allowed the detection of faint diffuse X-ray emission from the hot gas in the central cavity of the Saturn Nebula. Detailed analysis of the X-ray data shows that the Saturn Nebula represents a late evolutionary stage at which the influence of the hot gas in planetary nebula interiors starts to decline.
