About this Image

[Left] XMM-Newton EPIC 3-colour X-ray image of the supergiant spiral galaxy M101. The colours correspond to X-ray energy bands of 0.3-0.5 keV (red), 0.5-2 keV (green) and 2-4.5 keV (blue). The footprint of the Optical Monitor (OM) field-of-view is overlaid. [Right] XMM-Newton OM ultraviolet (UV) image of M101. Colours correspond to the UVW1 filter (red), UVM2 filter (green) and UVW2 filter (blue). The majority of the X-ray point sources are located in M101 itself, although a few are background galaxies shining through the disk of M101. There is also diffuse X-ray emission visible in the central regions of the galaxy.
