About this Image

The image shows the Subaru/XMM-Newton Deep Field (SXDF) in the X-ray, taken by XMM-Newton's EPIC-pn camera. Seven overlapping observations in the field were used to form this image.

The SXDF is a region of space 1.3 degrees across which is being studied in several wavelength bands in order to investigate the content of the universe. Galaxies in the universe are not uniformly distributed, they form a sponge-like structure of filaments where many galaxies exist and voids where few galaxies exist. In surveying a large area, it is hoped that this filamentary stucture of the universe may be examined.

Over 1000 X-ray sources were found in the X-ray images. The image is false-coloured by photon energy such that low energy events are shown in red, intermediate in green and high in blue, within the 0.5-10 keV energy band.

    Date of Observation 2003-01-07
    Image size 1.30 x 1.30 degrees
Detailed Caption The total exposure time needed to produce this image exceeded 100 hours. The central section took 100 ks of exposure time, and the six surrounding sections 50 ks each. Data were taken in 2000 July 31st - August 6th, in 2002 August 8th-12th and in 2003 on January 7th. The EPIC-pn camera was operated in full frame mode, using the thin filter.
