About this Image

In the right panel the image shows ρ Ophiuchi, a relatively young and close star-forming region. The Deep Rho Oph XMM-Newton Observation (DROXO) project examines spectroscopic variability in YSOs in the ρ Ophiuchi region. The image is false-coloured by energy band such that objects emitting photons of different energies appear in different colours. The lightcurves (left panel) show the X-ray variability of the YSOs IRS55/GY380, WL20/GY240, DoAr25/GY17 and WL2/GY128 (top to bottom). The count rate (counts/ks) is plotted against the time (in ks) after the start of the first pn exposure. The thick red line shows the background subtracted source light curve. The investigators observed the following behaviour: IRS55/GY380 (top panel) shows a complex "modulated¨ flare; WL20/GY240 and DoAr25/GY17 (middle panels) show a smooth modulation; WL2/GY128 (bottom panel) shows flares.
