About this Image

The image shows the starburst galaxy M 83 as seen in the X-ray band by XMM-Newton's EPIC cameras. The image is false-coloured as follows: soft (0.2-0.8 keV) photons are shown in red, medium (0.8-1.5 keV) in green and hard (1.5-12 keV) in blue. The spiral structure and extended emission can be seen clearly in the lowest energy band and to a much lesser extent the medium band. See the associated article for the derived scientific results.
