About this Image

The image shows the molecular cloud OMC2 as seen in the X-ray by XMM-Newton in the 0.2 - 12 keV band. It is false coloured as follows: soft (200 - 1000 eV) photons are shown in red, medium (1000 - 2000 eV) in green and hard (2000 - 12000 eV) in blue. The variety of colours of the sources in this field shows that they emit X-rays of different energies. Data from four exposures were combined to produce the image, and a mask has been overlayed to show the boundaries of the combined imaging area.
